Rent split calculator (by room size)
Enter the monthly rent, each bedroom’s size and any extras. The calculator splits part of the rent equally for shared spaces and the rest by room size.
How the calculator works
- Shared part: the “shared spaces %” of the rent covers the hall, kitchen, common bathroom and location, and is split equally between rooms.
- By size: the rest of the rent is split in proportion to each bedroom’s area.
- Extras: each room’s premium (attached bathroom, balcony, wardrobe) is added to that room and taken off the other rooms equally, so the shares still add up to the rent.
The default numbers are the 3BHK example from our guide: a ₹45,000 flat with one 160 sq ft master bedroom with an attached bathroom (₹1,500 premium) and two 120 sq ft rooms. The result is ₹18,300 / ₹13,350 / ₹13,350.
Choosing the shared percentage
Most flats use 30–50%. Pick a higher number when the hall and kitchen are large and everyone uses them a lot, and a lower number when people mostly stay in their rooms. At 100% the rent is split equally regardless of room size; at 0% it’s split purely by area.
Measuring rooms
Length × width in feet is enough. Measure wall to wall, ignore cupboards, and be consistent. If you don’t want to measure, estimate the rooms as a ratio (for example 4 : 3 : 3) and enter those numbers instead. Only the proportions matter.

Questions
How do you split rent by room size?
Split part of the rent equally for shared spaces (often 40%) and the rest in proportion to bedroom area, then add premiums for extras like an attached bathroom.
What if I don’t know the exact room sizes?
Use a ratio such as 4 : 3 : 3. Only the proportions matter.
