WiFi, OTT, DTH and gas: the small monthly bills
Individually they’re small. Together, broadband, three streaming apps, the gas cylinder and maintenance can add up to several thousand rupees a month. Here’s how to split each one.
Broadband: split equally
Everyone uses the WiFi, even the person who “only uses mobile data”. Split it equally. If one person works from home and needs a faster plan, a fair option is: split the price of the basic plan equally, and they pay the difference for the upgrade.
Broadband is often paid for several months at once for a discount. Add the whole payment as one expense when it’s made; it’s still split equally. If someone moves out mid-way, see prorating.
OTT subscriptions: only those who watch
Streaming apps are where “equal” goes wrong. Make a simple table and split each one between the people who actually use it:
| Service | A | B | C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | ✓ | ✓ | — |
| JioHotstar (cricket season) | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Prime | — | ✓ | ✓ |
In ttmm, untick the people who aren’t in when you add each subscription. Check the plan’s terms on how many screens or households it allows.
DTH or cable TV
Split equally among people who use the TV in the hall. Someone who never watches can opt out, but then they shouldn’t complain about the channel.
The LPG cylinder
Split equally among everyone who cooks or eats home food. Two practical tips:
- Keep a spare cylinder if you can, and put “book the next cylinder” on the chore wheel the day you switch.
- If you use piped gas (PNG), treat it like the electricity bill: split equally, or by who cooks.
Society maintenance and parking
Maintenance is usually split like rent (it’s part of the cost of the flat). Parking is paid by whoever has a vehicle, or split between those who park.
Set them all up once
Add each one as a recurring bill with the right people ticked. ttmm adds them every month, so the small bills stop being forgotten. They add up.
Questions
Should someone who doesn’t use the WiFi much pay less?
Usually no. Everyone benefits from the connection; split it equally. Only upgrades for one person should be paid by that person.
How do flatmates split Netflix and other OTT apps?
Only between the people who use each one. Check the plan’s screen and household rules.
How do roommates split the gas cylinder?
Equally among everyone who cooks or eats home-cooked food.
